I agree, this was just blatant racism.

The Supreme Court ruled that schools can use affirmative action in college admissions.

See Grutter v. Bollinger

If the sign is racist, then we proved our point: affirmative action IS racism.

That is Exactly what we were trying to prove. Thanks!

No, all you've proved that you are good at writing racist signs. It doesn't prove anything for or against your cause.

But hey, you have the right to do that. I support your free speech rights.

Affirmative Action, while not perfect, is the only way right now that we can assure that the systematic racism that occurs in college admissions can be combatted. It is pretty well documented that SATs, intelligence tests, and college entrance exams are culturally biased. If we could develop less racist (and sexist, classist, etc.) ways of defining intelligence and ability, then we wouldn't need affirmative action. What society defines as "knowledge" is built upon a canon, or previously agreed upon knowledge. If it has been argued that the previously agreed upon knowledge is in fact racist, what efforts can we make to assure that the ideas, beliefs, and values formed by this canon get changed to be more inclusive? My first answer is dialogue. The problem is, everytime people speak out to create a dialogue around these issues, they are silenced (usually forcefully) by the current politcal climate. When those of us who disagree with the hegemony of popular culture speak out, we become open for attack by people who think "truth" is blindly mimicking current political rhetoric.
Affirmative Action is a systemic answer to a systemic problem. It is very similar to western medicine: treat the symptom instead of finding the problem. If you don't like affirmative action, tell me a solution that guarantees that racism can be eliminated from our society.

I realize that that last comment was made probably a long while ago, but exactly how in the fuck is algebra and a basic understanding of word useage and grammar racially biased? Affirmative action worked back when it was needed - when minority cultures were so hopelessly lost in the public education system that they needed an extra boost so that their stupid asses could get into a college ahead of a far more qualified white male student. The tables have turned and there's actually been a MAJOR decrease in the number of white males attending college. It's time to give up the racist institution designed to give an unfair advantage to someone because of the way they were born, and put everyone back on a fair playing field.
