Moving to D.C.

I just got back from Washington, D.C. where I finally found a place to live. My new address will be 5905 K Coverdale Way in Alexandria, Virginia 22310 I am looking forward to moving out there at the end of July. I start my job the first week in August. My posts will obviously contain notes about what I am doing with Freedom Works, in addition to the progress my friends are making in groups like YCT and YCC. I am excited to take the next step in the "revolution."

My New Job

I will be leaving San Diego (sadly), and will be taking a job with Freedom Works in D.C. (gladly). I am really excited about this opportunity. I'll be the Grassroots Manager for Freedom Works, building a grassroots army of conservatives. I'll be moving out to DC by the end of the month. I sure will miss those warm and breezy California days. :( But I look forward to working full-time as an activist and advocate. To all my buds in Cali, Call Me, and we'll set up a time to get a beer before I leave.

Poetic Justice

The Supreme Court may just get what it desires. Justice Souter's home could be in trouble. Check this out. Eminent domain is tyranny, especially when private entities can take land or other property from other private entities. I hope the SCOTUS learns from this mistake.

Supreme Court Legalizes Theft of Private Property

The story is here. This is a travesty. The rationale for taking one's private property is that it will provide economic benefits to the city. Basically, the self-appointed Philosopher-Kings have destroyed another principle upon which our country was founded. And, in other news: the House passed a Constitutional Amendment to ban flag burning. There goes free speech. What is America becoming?

God and Man at Yale

I have just finished Bill Buckley's God and Man at Yale. A fantastic read for young conservatives. It's funny how similar are the tone and style of his and my book. Don't interpret this as my comparing the quality of the books, but I sense that what he felt in 1951, I felt in 2004. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the problems of professors who teach collectivism and socialism. (Pretty much 9 out of 10 in the social sciences.)

PETA Kills Animals? Yep...

PETA reached the zenith of hypocrisy with this one. They have been saying that they have been "euthanizing" animals. It just doesn't get any better than this.

YCC Growing Slowly

My friend Daniel Martinez and I are beginning to get YCC off the ground. We will be recruiting members and writing the Constitution and bylaws soon. By next fall we hope to have a few viable chapters in Southern California. We will be a mix of college students, high school students and young professionals. We hope to organize the YCC either by city or by county, starting with San Diego, Los Angeles and Riverside. I look forward to working with Daniel on furthering The Conservative Revolution in California.

Cal State San Bernardino Profs Lash Out at Conservatives

My friend Ryan Sorba put up a professor watchlist that has been causing waves on his campus: http://www.sbsun.com/Stories/0,1413,208~12588~2898096,00.html See for yourself if the article is "fair and balanced" or not. During the forum, which I attended, the CR were called "weird", "liars" and "disgusting" by professors and other students. I have video of much of the forum to provide the other side of the story that the local paper left out.

The Conservative Revolution

I am currently negotiating with a conservative foundation/publishing company about republishing my student guide to activism: The Conservative Revolution: How to Win the Battle for College Campuses. We are in the process of re-editing the book, which should hopefully be finished by the end of June. We are hoping to have the new version out by the fall. Stay tuned.

Muslims blame Newsweek for riots

Grand Mufti Adul-Aziz al-Sheik issued his statement a day after Newsweek retracted its report, saying a full inquiry still should be launched "to alleviate the sorrow that befell Muslims." This is just plain ridiculous. It is simply another example of Muslims placing the blame on someone else. So, Newsweek's article about desecrating the Quran angered many Muslims. This does not mean that Newsweek should be held responsible for the riots. Why can't these zealots take responsibility for their own problems? Oh, wait, that is one of the reasons they attacked the U.S. on 911. Same symptoms, same disease.

Freedom Fest a Success

This weekend was amazing. I was able to talk to Dinesh D'Souza, Ted Nugent, Ward Connerly, David Horowitz, Mark Larson and numerous brilliant student leaders from around the country. My friend Charles Ganske and I gave out 50 copies of our presentation on The New Young Conservative Movement. We were able to meet a few filmmakers as well, who gave us great advice on our upcoming documentary about the left-wing in this country. A great weekend indeed. I am flying to D.C. this weekend to discuss the nuts and bolts of our new magazine and film with some of my associates. It should be another fantastic weekend!

SAF Affecting UT-Austin??

I am proud to say that I started the UT Chapter of SAF with the help of some friends. Keep up the great work, guys! A Revealing Case at the University of Texas A recent debacle at the University of Texas drove home this very point. As was reported in an article on the InsideHigherEd.com website, the UT Board of Regents sent out a memo last month announcing an update to its rules on faculty rights and responsibility. Among the policies detailed in the memo was a section on “Freedom in the Classroom,” which stated that, “Faculty members are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing his or her subject, but are expected not to introduce into their teaching controversial matter that has no relation to his or her subject.” The InsideHigherEd.com article reveals what happened next: “As that language spread across the Internet, some professors suggested that there was a new crackdown in the works on what goes on in faculty classrooms, apparently to pre-empt David Horowitz-style “Academic Bill of Rights” legislation to regulate faculty conduct.”As it turns out, the faculty’s fears were both hysterical and utterly misguided. They were correct in thinking that the policy was similar—in fact, nearly identical—to that contained in many of the state legislative bills based on the Academic Bill of Rights. But they were wrong in thinking that it was new. The policy had actually been in place for decades, as have similar policies at universities all across the country, though a UT spokesman told InsideHigherEd that he could not recall any instance in which disciplinary proceedings had been brought against a faculty member for violating it.This incident is highly telling and speaks to the need for an Academic Bill of Rights. If the faculty at the University of Texas are wholly unaware of the policies governing academic freedom in the classroom, how can students possibly be expected to know and understand their rights, much less pursue grievances based on them? The Academic Bill of Rights and the state legislation inspired by it would remedy this disconnect between existing policy and practice.

Anti-War or Anti-United States Military?

Leftists at UT-Austin protested the recruitment offices of the armed forces yesterday. To me, this sends a clear message that the peace movement is more anti-American than anti-war. You don't see them protesting the likes of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, Saddam Hussein or other totalitarian warmongers. The left will support any thug who "stands up to US imperialism." The left's motto should be: Terrorists, tyrants and traitors in solidarity against America!

Leftist Intolerance--Conservative Speakers Assaulted on Campuses

Once again, the left shows its true attitude toward intellectual diversity and civility. Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, William Kristol and now David Horowitz have all been assaulted by leftist students in recent weeks. http://www.frontpagemag.com/blog/index.asp There's a wave of leftist violence against conservative speakers on college campuses, and tonight I was a target. Four juvenile delinquents at Butler University doused me with a chocolate cream pie at the beginning of my speech on academic freedom (as if to make my point!). Three of them were arrested including a female who hurled racial epithets at my friend Marvin Scott, a professor at Butler and the Republican candidate for the Senate in the November election. This kind of thuggish behavior is of course encouraged by a radical faculty which regularly derides conservatives and conservative students and by an administration which tolerates all this. I was lucky my glasses weren't broken, since the pie was slammed into my face at eye level. After drying off, I went on with my speech to a mostly leftwing audience. I will press charges if the opportunity is provided. There should be zero tolerance for obstruction of campus speakers whether they be Pat Buchanan (who also got pied) or Noam Chomsky. I'll be interested to hear what the Butler administration and faculty have to say.

Al Qaeda was Close to Developing WMD

The full story is here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,152034,00.html The discovery of Al Qaeda's work came only after the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan removed the Taliban from power, the report says. "Al Qaeda's biological program was further along, particularly with regard to Agent X, than pre-war intelligence indicated," the report says. "The program was extensive, well-organized, and operated for two years before September 11, but intelligence insights into the program were limited." Here is something even more frightening: Al Qaeda was studying nuclear weapons and contacted Pakistani scientists to discuss nuclear weapons, it notes. Had this new information not been acquired, and had Al Qaeda been allowed to continue weapons development, a future intelligence failure could have been in the offing." No kidding.

Iran: What to Do? ARI says "No diplomacy"

Death to "Diplomacy" with Iran European "diplomacy" with Iran--now supported by Washington--is self-destructive. By Elan Journo The widely hailed diplomatic effort led by Britain, France and Germany is touted as a reasonable way to settle the dispute over Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program without any losers. By enticing Iran to the negotiating table, we are told, the West can avoid a military confrontation, while Iran gains "economic incentives" that can help build its economy. But this deal--now backed also by the Bush Administration--can only strengthen Iran and turn it into a greater menace. Read the full Op-Ed at http://www.aynrand.org/nodiplomacywithiran

Peaceniks Occupy Balboa Park in San Diego—Greet “Dissenters” with Intimidation

(March 19, 2005) On the second anniversary of the liberation of Iraq, the so called “peace protestors” showed their true colors again. In the military town of San Diego, a couple hundred hippies and anarchists gathered in Balboa Park, eerily reminiscent of the latest South Park episode. The local chapter of Protest Warrior, to which this author belongs, was there to play the role of Eric Cartman, to “end the occupation of Balboa Park” by the hippies. The Protest Warriors set up a Patriots Picnic across the way from the radical leftists, and provided a positive alternative to their Bush-hatred and Anti-Americanism. A small cadre of warriors also decided to infiltrate the rally and see what the lefties were up to. This special ops squad had to bypass the police barricade by going around the park and entering from behind. When they got there, the scene was quite a fantasyland of love, peace, justice and pot. Yes, the foul stench of the sacred herb of the left filled the air as the crew entered their turf. One of the protest warriors was dressed as Saddam and held a sign pointing out the apologies the left makes for tyrants. He thanked them for their hospitality and for trying to protect him against the evil American empire. He was followed by a few more warriors holding other provocative signs such as “Except for ending slavery, fascism, nazism and communism, war never solved anything.” One woman, upon seeing such foolishness, said that she wanted Saddam to be freed. Another angry man, when asked if he supported the troops, replied, “F!@#! the troops. F!@# them!” As the infiltration team made its way to the center of the brouhaha, they were surrounded by the surprisingly angry and pushy peaceniks, who began chanting, “Fascist warriors, go away!” The crowd started pushing and yelling at the “little Eichmans” and encouraged them to leave the premises. As the scene became more hostile, the police finally intervened. The irony of the leftists suppressing dissent was apparently not a part of the discussion as they shouted down and followed the group down the sidewalk. As one of the warriors was being interviewed by the local Fox affiliate, a leftist approached him, tried to put a sticker on his face, and then shoved the man while the camera was rolling. This aggressive act was captured on the author’s digital video as well. The funny thing was that the police grabbed them man and then promptly let him go. There can be no denying that this particular group of leftists was not the tolerant, inclusive, civil and diverse group that they claimed to be. Their message was clear: They can protest the war and call George Bush a Nazi and a terrorist, but if anyone dissents from this position, they should be marginalized and even attacked. Today’s events in San Diego are further proof that the “peace movement” is not so peaceful after all. They pay lip service to caring about the troops, when they really don’t support them or their mission. They can be some of the most emotional and violent people active in public discourse. The leftists use the peace movement to promote their insidious and totalitarian ideas while intimidating and harassing those who disagree with them. Because the news media refuses to report these facts, Protest Warriors have taken it upon themselves to expose these radicals for who they really are. And they have the pictures and video tapes to prove it. Brendan Steinhauser lives in San Diego and is the author of The Conservative Revolution: How to Win the Battle for College Campuses.

Why the Left Hates America

Recent conversations with leftists have made me realize how right-on Dan Flynn's book is. Check out "Why the Left Hates America." Inevitably the discussions with leftists about the war on terrorism or the Patriot Act turn into the leftists bashing America as the imperial terrorist state, and as the Islamist radicals as the oppressed peoples. Moral equivalency or purposeful attacks on America? I have come to believe it is the latter, rather than the former.

Dan Rather's Last Report

Although he rightfully took heat for showing us forged documents on 60 minutes, I must say I am almost sad to see him go. I grew up watching him and the other anchors merely because Fox News and the Internet were not around. Also, Dan Rather is a fellow Texan, and ya'll know how we Texans have a special bond. I do think his last report is the end of an era. His last report for CBS News signals the end of the old media. Goodbye, and goodnight to broadcast news networks. Your time has passed. Now is the beginning of the bloggers' revenge. It was the blogger's who caused his downfall, and it will be the bloggers' who replace him. Rise of the Hawkish Libertarians

I think the trend among young conservatives these days is that they are a little different from those of yesteryear. I'm not just talking about the neocon phenomenon. I am referring to the libertarian bent of the new breed of young conservative. As I wrote in my book, they are less likely to want moralizing in their daily lives. They tend to want less regulations on drugs and guns, and less protectionist trade policies. They tend to like free trade, the free market and free thinking. Religion plays less of a role in their lives, and so do their parents' worldviews. I think that many of these post-911 conservatives are a mixture of rebellious teenagers, South Park Republicans and patriotic former liberals who woke up and smelled the coffee. They realized that the somewhat hedonistic pleasures they often enjoy are threatened by theocratic and fascist Islamists. Its kind of an interesting phenomenon. I am today declaring the rise of the hawkish libertarians so that when it becomes a household name, I can be the "father" of this budding movement. Just kidding. But seriously though, it would be cool.

Leftist Losers on College Campuses

YCT is at it again and the left is furious. Here is video. Here is commentary on the event from my friend at Voice in the Wilderness. Here is the letter I sent to the Daily Texan concerning the radical left at UT-Austin. A Daily Texan columnist described the leftists this way, "At one point, I managed to wrestle my way to the front of the crowd and was hit in the back of the head by candy. Yes, candy. The "peaceful" protestors who will simply not stand for violence or hate had taken YCT's candy and baked goods and were literally pelting the members with them. I even got to hear one charming girl yell at the YCT chairman, "Why won't you fight me? I came here to fight. I want a fight." It was horrific; it was mean spirited. It was the mob."

Bush's Effect on Freedom in the World

This is an amazing quote from a pro-democracy Syrian. If it is true, then it shows the power of rhetoric and moral support as the keys to bringing change to the Mid-East. I think this is an incredible statement by someone inside Syria who wants the American people and the rest of the free world to support them. As Michael Ledeen says, "Faster, please." http://www.nationalreview.com/interrogatory/ghadry200503020754.asp NRO: Are the people in Syria liable to be seriously encouraged by the Lebanese? Or is the Baath grip too strong? Ghadry: In my talks with the Syrians inside Syria, they are resisting demonstrating because as one human-rights activist told me: "President Bush has yet to call for freedom for the Syrian people." President Bush needs to give a "Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall" speech to the Syrians. This article by Max Boot in the LA Times also contains a fascinating quote: "It's strange for me to say it," says Lebanese Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, who would never be mistaken for a Bush backer, "but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq.""Now with the new Bush administration," confirms former Lebanese President Amin Gemayel, "we feel a stronger determination in liberating Lebanon and in promoting democracy in the Middle East."Maybe, just maybe, those neocons weren't so nutty after all."

Why Don't Leftists Support Democracy Against Fascism?

Recent events in Lebanon got me thinking. I am predicting that the left will not support the pro-democratic elements in Lebanon; just as they have not supported the wars to liberate Afghanistan and Iraq. These are wars that allowed for elections in these countries, mind you. This is from my friend at Front Page Magazine, Jamie Glazov. "Despots and terrorists like Saddam and Osama are the greatest persecutors of all leftist ideals and values. How can the Left not be violently opposed to such figures and the systems they lead? Where are radical Western feminists, for instance, screaming for the rights of women under militant Islam?" I love it. I think it captures the essence of the hypocrisy of the left when it comes to the war on terrorism. Just because they hate Bush, leftists refuse to support wars against terror regimes that would gladly kill them first because of their secular, hedonistic ways. The irony is maddening.

Syria--Leave Lebanon Now!

Another blow to the terror regimes of the Middle East was struck this week. Here is a great piece by Michael Ledeen of AEI on National Review's website: http://www.nationalreview.com/ledeen/ledeen200503010752.asp Recent events have proven that Arabs are not only capable but are willing to fight for their freedom and democracy. I guess you could say that Bush and his neocons have been somewhat vindicated by the election in Iraq and the people's uprising in Lebanon. Also, significant changes are occurring in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Morocco, Palestine and Bahrain. In five years who knows what kind of progress our Arab brothers and sisters will make toward democracy. We should all support them in their brave efforts.

Privacy--Violations by Criminals and the Government

My personal bank account just got hacked again. Thanks to Pay Pal and CitiBank, some loser bought himself a laptop with the money from my book sales. I have decided to quit the online banking industry and retreat hermit-like into a privacy kookdom. Enough already. If these small-time criminals can get my money and personal information, just think what the government could do with it if they get it. I have not really been a huge privacy nut until this point, since I didn't fully understand the implications. Now that it has happened to me, I imagine I will be more vocal about such issues. I hope this criminal is enjoying his precious laptop, because if I track him down there will be Texas justice to pay.

YCT Convention a Success

I just returned from Austin, Tx where I attended the 25th anniversary convention of YCT. I was able to meet Fred Barnes and Dinesh D'Souza, two very eloquent and brilliant conservatives. I also got to hear Congressman Ron Paul speak about his libertarian-far-right views on everything from economic policy to foreign affairs. There was a fiery and vigorous debate among the conservatives in attendance. There seems to be a healthy contingent of paleocons, neocons and libertariancons. I, for one, am grateful we have such a vibrant debate in the conservative movement. Unlike the Democrats, we have ideas for moving the country foreward. I cherish being a member of a movement that debates and engages itself in exactly how to achieve our common goals of limited government, individual liberty and the rule of law.

Eminent Domain = Tyranny

Here is the story. Ayn Rand is turning in her grave on this one. The government of a town in Connecticut is trying to steal private land because it is in the "public interest." Another case of elitism run rampant. "We know what is best for the city as a whole, so we are going to take your property and redistriubte it to another private party for development." The Supreme Court is about to hear this case, which the ARI has written an op-ed about here.

Condi for President in 2008

The blogosphere is abuzz over who should run against Hillary in 2008. In my mind, the only one that can beat her is Condi Rice. It would be a fantastic matchup, mano e mano, er.. woman against woman. I hereby announce my own support for Condi in 08. You read it here first. Rice for President! Here are some sites dedicated to her cause: http://www.rice2008.com/ http://condoleezza.blogspot.com/ http://condiforpresident2008.blogspot.com/

Young Conservatives of Texas--25th Anniversary Convention

The YCT 25th is next week in Austin, Texas. As I chronicled in my book, YCT has been at the forefront of the campus culture war. We broke away from Young Americans for Freedom in 1980 and have been leading the charge against the academic left ever since. We also have a huge influence in Austin at the State Capitol. Check out details of the convention here. Some of our speakers include Ron Paul, Fred Barnes, Dinesh D'Souza and David Dewhurst. I can't wait to fly back to Austin and see my friends, as well as these big-time political personalities. As one of my friends used to say, "we are conservative thinkers and liberal drinkers."

Wear Red on Fridays--Show Support for the Troops

My grandfather recently told me that he was working with the American Legion in south central Texas to support an idea that has been around for the last year or two. I have decided to help the cause as much as possible. We are urging all patriotic Americans to wear something red each and every Friday while our troops are in harm's way. Please support this cause by making a special effort. In light of the sacrifices our troops are making, this shouldn't be too difficult. http://www.patrioticfridays.com/ WEAR SOMETHING RED Feb 3, 2005 - Mar 5, 2005 11:00 AM Any town, USA The Americans who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, nor to reflect what our opinions are. We would like to start a grassroots movement using the membership of the Special Operations Association, and Special Forces Associations, and all their friends, simply, to recognize that Americans support our troops. We need to inform the local VFW's and American Legion, our local press, local TV, and continue carrying the message to the national levels as we start to get this going. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is -- starting Friday, and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. Let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays. I sent this out to everyone on my email list; hopefully, you will too.

Northwestern Law Professor a Terrorist?

This seems to be a growing problem. Lynne Stewart, Ward Churchill and Bill Ayers are all arguably terrorist-professors. Why has the mainstream media ignored this problem? Perhaps the far-left gets a pass when it comes to allying themselves with extremist causes. Dangerous indeed. Here is an excerpt from the story on Front Page Magazine. By Brian Hecht FrontPageMagazine.com February 16, 2005 http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=17043 Although the controversy over University of Colorado professor Ward Churchill’s pro-terrorist ravings has captured national headlines recently, the flirtation between America’s institutions of higher learning and radical, left-wing activism is hardly a new phenomenon. U.S. colleges and universities are rife with Marxist holdouts like Churchill and other relics from the Sixties. And while many, like Churchill, have openly supported America’s terrorist enemies, a dubious few have actually held prominent positions in terrorist groups. One of the most notable examples of this disturbing phenomenon is Bernardine Dohrn, an Associate Professor and the Director of the Children and Family Justice Clinic at the Northwestern University Law School. Although it is conveniently absent from her biography on Northwestern’s website, Dohrn was one of the leaders of the Weathermen (a.k.a: the Weather Underground), a band of radical students and student-aged activists who emerged from the antiwar group, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). The Weatherman won the SDS elections in 1968 and then dissolved SDS, saying, “We've smashed the pig.” The Weathermen are responsible for multiple terrorist acts, including the bombings of the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, Ft. Dix and office buildings in various U.S. cities. In fact, the group claimed credit for 12 terrorist bombings between 1970 and 1974 alone; and while no innocent civilians were killed: 1. They planned to blow up a social dance at Fort Dix. The bomb went off and blew three of the bomb builders up. 2. The police are investigating the bombing murders of two policemen attributed to Weatherman. In other words, if no innocents were killed, it certainly wasn’t for lack of effort on the Weathermen’s part. The group’s lawlessness was hardly limited to setting explosives, as they also helped plan and execute the escape of Harvard professor and LSD advocate Timothy Leary from federal prison in 1970, furnishing him with a fake passport and smuggling him to a Black Panthers training camp in Algeria. Bernardine Dohrn, tellingly enough, helped set the tone for the Weathermen’s militant agenda. She was arrested for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest during an attempt to incite a riot during the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago and even spent time on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List.

Blogs--A Revolution of the Media

Lately there has been a lot of chatter about the web log, or so-called "blogs". Basically, a blog is nothing more than an online journal whereby an average person can publish their thoughts. (If you are reading this and don't have a clue, this is a blog...) I think blogs are the next revolution in news media. Consider the recent scandals with CBS and CNN. The 2004 election was also heavily influenced by this new media. The exit polls showing Kerry way ahead turned out to be flawed. http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21932-2004Nov3.html Why do so many "old media" hate the upcoming blogger revolution? Because the blogs challenge their supremacy as news gatherers and their profits. Shouldn't all Americans cheer for the blog, since it represents the "little guy"? Liberals and even some conservative media outlets decry the blogs as being spawned from unprofessionals. Too bad. We are here to stay! Americans should welcome blogs as a much needed check on the MSM (mainstream media for you newbies). Here are a few resources for those unfamiliar with the phenomena: Hugh Hewitt's book, BLOG http://www.hughhewitt.com/ Wikipedia's definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog John Leo on Blogs http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/leo050602.asp

Lynne Stewart--Traitor and Terrorist Sympathizer

It is sad the left still sees this attorney who aided Islamist terrorists as a "civil rights" lawyer. She is a traitor and an accomplice to murder. There is a good piece in the National Review about her today. http://www.nationalreview.com/mccarthy/mccarthy200502150746.asp The left often crosses the line into treason. Ramsey Clark, Michael Moore and domestic Islamists often line up with our enemies. There should be punishment for such atrocious activity. Lynee Stewart has rightfully received hers.

1984: Orwellian National ID Cards

Here is a story that frightens me a bit. I found it online here: http://www.infowars.com/articles/ps/nat_id_super_card_passes_house.htm#bill As I mentioned in a previous post, conservatives need to be careful when it comes to granting the federal government more intrusive powers in the name of fighting terrorism. Could this be a slippery slope to tyranny? With Hillary in power, I am afraid to find out. National ID Cards Coming Up For A Vote This Week: Threats to gun owners' privacy are a huge concern Gun Owners of America February 9, 2005 The National ID card is back in the news, as Congress is getting set once again to debate the issue. You will remember that late last year, Congress passed (and the President signed) legislation which starts us down the road to a National ID card. In the name of preventing alien terrorists from operating in this country, the so-called Intelligence Reform bill gave federal bureaucrats unprecedented new powers to force changes in state-issued driver's licenses -- including, possibly, the addition of computer chip technology that can facilitate the tracking of all U.S. citizens. Now, the House will be debating new legislation, H.R. 418, that was recently introduced by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI). In considering this bill, the U.S. House will vote on whether to empower the federal government to determine who can get a driver's license -- and under what conditions. Since you need a driver's license to purchase a gun from a dealer, this will give BATFE the expanded ability to impose even greater forms of gun control -- something which it has long coveted. This will become even more apparent if an anti-gun Democrat like Hillary Clinton wins the presidency in 2008. H.R. 418 is, unfortunately, supported by many Republicans who believe that repealing our liberties will somehow make us "secure." But GOA joined a large coalition of citizen-activist organizations this week in opposition to H.R. 418. In a letter to Congress, the coalition stated: Standardization of driver's licenses has long been recognized as a bureaucratic back-door to implementation of a national ID card. With its required linking of databases and ability of the Secretary of Homeland Security to require a prescribed format, HR 418 takes us well along that road. Concerns are further heightened when the bill fails to even provide lip service to privacy concerns, and proposes to share all of our data on the driver's license database with Canada and Mexico. Realizing government's tendency towards mission creep, no one should be surprised if this database grows to contain far more information than that which is relevant to driving. HR 418 requires that the database shall contain "at a minimum," all information contained on the driver's license as well as driving history. There is no limit to what other information may eventually be contained in the database -- something which should definitely concern gun owners. H.R. 418 is being touted as a way of cleaning up some of the problems with the law that was enacted last December. But this bill is still an attack on states' rights. It still takes us down the road to a National ID card. And it would still do nothing to keep real terrorists from operating in our country.

Clinton's indictment of Osama proves Iraqi connection

I find it interesting that anti-war folks keep saying "Iraq was not linked to al Qaeda. They were enemies of each other." Funny, that is not what Richard Clarke said in the Washington Post in 1999 when he justified the bombing of the Sudanese al Shifa aspirin factory/chemical weapons plant. http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=37704 Also, President Clinton's 1998 indictment said that al Qaeda had forged alliances with Iran, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, and had agreed to work with Iraq on weapons development. You can read the indictment here http://www.fas.org/irp/news/1998/11/indict1.pdf An article in National Review by Deroy Murdock discusses some of the other statements by Richard Clarke and others. For instance, Clarke told the 911 Commission "The Iraqi government," Clarke continued, "didn't cooperate in turning [one of the 93 WTC bombers] over and gave him sanctuary, as it did give sanctuary to other terrorists." http://www.nationalreview.com/murdock/murdock200403260858.asp So, if even Clarke admits Iraq harbored terrorists who had attacked America, why the rewrite of history? Why do liberals still claim that Iraq had "no connection" to al Qaeda? Why do they say this even when the 911 Commission Report says that there was a connection? I like how Deroy Murdock answers this in his NR piece: "Critics of Operation Iraqi Freedom ignore these and many more ties among Saddam Hussein, al Qaeda, Palestinian zealots, and other Islamofascist mass murderers. Why? Acknowledging these contacts would concede a major casus belli behind Coalition efforts. The fact that Mohamed Atta did not charge his plane ticket to Hussein's Platinum Visa card does not render the Butcher of Baghdad a virgin among militant Muslims. In fact, Saddam Hussein loyally supported global terrorists, including al Qaeda. If Richard Clarke and others who oppose Bush's Iraq policy still do not see this, they are either blind to Nexis and similar news databases or paralyzed in a state of deep, pathological denial." Here is a good place to see a more complete picture of Saddam's support for Islamist terrorists www.husseinandterror.com

National Lawyer Guild--Defenders of Terrorists?

Here is an excerpt of an email I received from the San Diego chapter of United for Peace and Justice. ( I am on a number of local leftists' email lists to keep updated on their activities.) "The Guild has a long history of representing individuals whom the government has deemed a threat to national security, including helping expose illegal FBI and CIA surveillance, infiltration and disruption tactics (COINTELPRO) that the U.S. Senate "Church Commission" hearings detailed in 1975-76 and that led to enactment of the Freedom of Information Act and other limitations on federal investigative power." One has to wonder what makes them so proud of defending national security threats. Congress once called the NLG a "communist" organization. I will do my own investigation and present the results on this blog sometime in the near future.

Security vs. Liberty

What is a conservative to do? In the war against militant Islam we certainly want to destroy the networks of al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, the Mullahs of Iran, the Saudi Wahabis etc.. But at what cost to our own personal liberties? Should we allow the executive branch to wage war against nations without a declaration of war? Probably. Should we allow the detention of US citizens without charges being brought by the government? Maybe. Should we allow for torture of militant Muslims who seek to kill us? Probably not. I don't have all the answers. But I do think these are questions that we should consider as conservatives. Today I heard a lecture by a professor from Stanford who represented Jose Padilla (dirty bomber) before the Supreme Court. She told me that there have been numerous cases where the government had no evidence against suspected terrorists. She believes that the government should not be able to declare US citizens "enemy combatants" and that even suspected terrorists deserve Constitutional protections of due process. I tend to agree with her in theory, but not quite in practice. I think with fanatics like these who want to kill everyone who doesn't own a Koran, we have to fight pretty dirty. We can't win with one hand tied behind our back. However, what happens when the day comes that the federal government kicks down your door to take your guns? Or when the government deems all Christians "terrorists"? What about when the government declares that all those who carry a pocket-sized edition of the Constitution are terrorists? Then, will conservatives support the idea of hamstringing the government in its fight against "terrorists"? I pose this question as food for thought. I am not certain where I come down on this issue. But it is something we should all ponder.

Ward Churchill

Iran: What to Do

Here is the lastest story about our friendly mullahs: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050209/ts_nm/iran_dc These guys just don't know when to quit. You would think that the toppling of the Taliban and Baathists would send a signal loud and clearly. Apparently not. The Iranian governmented still wants a nuclear arsenal so it can blackmail its neighbors and become a defiant regional power. It might even threaten the state of Israel with a nuke. Some have called for regime change, others for an olive branch. I suggest we support democratic elements within the country, like the nonviolent student movement there. Why have liberals been so quiet on this issue? Don't they support nonviolent student movements? I am waiting for an answer...

Response to Academic Freedom Inquiry

I am a proponent of the Academic Bill of Rights. This is a piece of legislation that suggests universities around the country adopt the ideals of intellectual diversity and academic freedom. I wrote this in response to one of the bill's critics. This post has already been published here: http://cwslsplp.blogspot.com/ Here it is: "This post is in response to the earlier one concerning academic freedom. My friend wrote, "an academic bill of rights is censorship. Some censorship is good and some is bad." I submit to you that both of these statements are false.Indeed, there is a problem of political indoctrination in higher education. This stems not just from the lack of conservative profs ( I don't condone affirmative action of conservative teachers ) but also from the discriminatory processes reflected in the hiring of college professors. The problem is not so much that profs use the classroom as a bully pulpit to inappropriately bludgeon conservative figures and ideas, as it is the lack of intellectual diversity among the faculty. This lack of academic pluralism is due to the fact that left-wing academics consider their conservative brethren to be racist, sexist, homophobic, oppressive, imperialistic etc... and therefore shut them out of the academy by not allowing them to join the faculty if they do not toe the leftist party line. How to remedy the situation? We shouldn't support "hiring more conservatives" to achieve a balance. Rather, we should adopt the Academic Bill of Rights, which prevents discrimination on the part of faculty hiring committees against conservative profs. This ensures that no one will be hired or fired based upon their political beliefs, as is the case now. To read the bill for yourself, click this link http://www.studentsforacademicfreedom.org/abor.html On the latter point raised in the previous post, I must disagree with the idea that censorship is necessary. As a free-market proponent, I believe that society should not impose its idea of what is "admissable" or "politically incorrect" on individuals. If individuals choose to print something that is "offensive" or "immoral" then parents have the right not to purchase that product, and to speak out against the publishers. If enough people in society agree that something is inappropriate (for example, Hustler Magazine) then they will vote with their pocket book and the free-market will take care of the problem. The FCC and entities like it do not protect society from itself as much as they impose the will of the "big brother" state and the religious lobby. As for professors in the classroom, no one is calling on them to do anything but perform the duties they were hired to do. Namely, they should teach the subject that they are experts in by providing students with all viable ideas, methods and analyses that they possibly can. However, a Spanish teacher has no place spending an hour bashing the President or recruiting students for protests. Those types of activities should occur outside of the classroom setting, a place where the students are the consumers and deserve their money's worth."

Welcome

Well, this is my other blog. The purely political one. I hope to have more than one loyal reader. But, if not, then I will still be entertained.
